  • Addressed mail: Mailing Preference Service/National Postal Register (Nationaal Postregister)

It is operated by Stichting Postfilter.

Individuals can register for free online establishing a personal page on postfilter.nl where data and preferences can be updated. The registration is valid for five years.

Individuals can indicate from which sectors they do or do not wish to receive unsolicited mail addressed advertising: Cars & Accessories; Books & Music; Energy; Charities (fundraising); Finance (banking and insurance); Horoscopes; Newspapers & Magazines; Lotteries; Home Shopping & Mail Ordering; Telecommunication & Computers.

Companies are required to clear their list with the register, but they can still contact individuals who are already customers. A license is free for DDMA members.

  • Unaddressed mail: Ja/Nee (Yes/No) and Nee/Nee (No/No) stickers

Individuals can request a special sticker to put on their mailbox to oppose unaddressed mail.

There are two kinds of stickers: ja/nee (yes/no) and nee/nee (no/no). The ja/nee sticker indicates that one does not want unaddressed printed advertisements but wants free local newspapers delivered. The nee/nee sticker indicates that one does not want any unaddressed mail.

  • Do not call register: ‘Bel-me-niet’

This national register is under the responsibility of the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs and is managed by the Infofilter foundation

It is a legal requirement as of 2009 and it is obligatory for all advertisers targeting the Dutch consumer and businesses that are “natural persons” under the law (see explanation telemarketing rules).

Only natural persons can register (no legal persons). Over 9 million home phone and mobile numbers are registered in 2015.

  • National Deceased Register (Nationaal Overledenenregister)

It is operated by Stichting Postfilter (Postfilter) since 1 October 2009.

This national register allows families to stop receiving advertising for deceased family members. The registration remains for ten years. All Dutch organizations that send addressed advertising mail are required by Dutch selfregulation to clear their lists with this register. A license is free for DDMA members.

  • Market Research List (MOA Onderzoekfilter)

It is operated by MOA – Center for Information Based Decision Making & Marketing Research- since 1 October 2009. Natural persons that do not wish to be contacted by telephone (landline or mobile) for market research purposes can require to be registered with the List (400 000 registrations by June 2013). The registration lasts for three years.

It is obligatory or non-obligatory depending on the sector the company is working in.
