FEDMA to reach out to Commissioner Thierry Breton on ePrivacy file

8 January 2020

Together with a number of trade association from the media sector, FEDMA has reached out to Mr Thierry Breton, new European Commissioner in charge of Internal Market since the 1st of November, to raise concerns around the ePrivacy legislation.

The letter follows the Telecom Council of Ministers from the 3rd December, where Member States had the opportunity to express their concerns with the legislative proposal which has been on the negotiating table since almost three years, and where Commissioner Breton demonstrated signs that Commission may consider taking a new approach to the text in light of the difficulties to reach an agreement.

The industry has voiced concerns in the letter that the current proposal does not have the right basis to balance privacy protection and a strong digital single market and encourages the Commission to repeal the current proposal and rethink the approach the European Union.

At this stage, a new impact assessment, taking into consideration learnings from negotiations over the past almost 3 years, as well as new technologies innovations and the learnings from the concrete implementation of the GDPR which has already led to significant changes across the digital ecosystem, would be necessary.
