New Deal for Consumers: progress on the modernisation of EU consumer law

18 April 2019

On 21 March, the Romanian Presidency announced that a provisional agreement, confirmed the following week by Member States’ ambassadors in COREPER, had been reached in trilogue on the modernisation of EU consumer law. The text of the agreement is available here. The provisional agreement will now need to be adopted by the European Parliament, which will be voted in Plenary on 17 April, and the Council.

The proposal in question amends four existing Directives: Council Directive on unfair terms in consumer contracts; Directive on consumer protection in the indication of the prices of products offered to consumers; Directive concerning unfair business-to-consumer commercial practices; and Directive on consumer rights. Part of the New Deal for Consumers package presented by the Commission in April 2018.

You can find here the final texts on the Digital Content Directive and the Sale of Goods Directive.
