Direct mail operates on an opt-out regime with a preference service/Robinson list, the Mailing Preference Service for consumers. If the organisation, which is sending the marketing mail, knows the name of the recipient, it should comply with the obligations imposed by the DPA, i.e. to inform the individual that is has their personal information and it will use it for marketing purposes and provide an opportunity to object to the use of the data for marketing communications.
