FEDMA holds successful data protection workshop

PRESS RELEASE

Brussels, 13 September 2007

FEDMA Holds successful Data Protection workshop

FEDMA hosted today its first data protection workshop to provide professionals with crucial knowledge on the latest and future developments in EU legislation.

Today’s seminar attracted a very high calibre of speakers including Jan Dhont from Lorenz Law Firm, Belgium; Michael Siegert of Siegert Attorneys, Germany; Xawery Konarski from Traple Konarski Podrecki-Kancelaria prawna, Poland; Alexander Singewald, of Singewald Consultants Group, the Netherlands; and José de Frutos Gomez from the European Commission, DG JLS - Data Protection Unit.

As data protection regulations at national, European and international levels are becoming increasingly complex and difficult for practitioners to follow the workshop highlighted some of the current challenges in data protection and provided guidelines on how to address them.

“Data protection measures are now appearing in all sorts of contexts – in transport laws, regulations on the energy market, etc. This means that direct marketers have to be aware of many more regulations than in the past” said Alastair Tempest, Director General of FEDMA. “In addition, as the Spanish representative at the workshop pointed out, some national data protection authorities have enormous power to penalize those who do not follow their data protection laws. Detailed knowledge of the laws and regulations is, therefore, ever more important”.

The seminar speakers were selectively chosen in order to ensure that workshop participants gained useful, practical, and concrete knowledge, which they will be able to utilize in their professional work.

The seminar covered topics such as the privacy challenges relating to the deployment of global marketing applications, the Commissions perspective on how to address the new challenges of data protection, and how to address the new restrictions on telemarketing in Germany.

The success of the workshop was reflected by the enthusiastic response to the event and FEDMA will continue to host other data protection seminars in 2008. For more information, please contact Anne Marheim Støren
